Suicide Themes

This novel is based on the journey of two men whose lives are irrevocably changed after each loses a loved one to suicide. There are detailed descriptions of death by suicide, self-harm, and grief. Some parts are written from experience, and others were written after extensive research and discussions with suicide attempt survivors and loved ones left behind after suicide loss. There are times where the grieving characters struggle with their losses and believe their loved ones were “selfish” or “cowardly”. These beliefs are discussed during their therapy sessions, and with friends, family, and support networks. As the characters heal and grow, their beliefs change.

These men do not shy away from showing their emotions. They cry, sometimes a lot, because they are grieving for a loved one lost to suicide. It should go without saying that fictional or not, men are allowed to cry and feel intense emotions.

Regardless of your feelings about this book, the belief that men don’t cry or are not emotional is a harmful stereotype that needs to end.

Cancer Themes

The second MC’s brother dies by suicide not long after his wife loses her battle with breast cancer. While the cancer diagnosis is briefly mentioned throughout the story, it’s not detailed until the epilogue. The epilogue is from the point of view of the young woman battling the final stages of breast cancer. The entire epilogue can be skipped if need be.

Sex as a coping mechanism / trauma response

In parts of the story, characters engage in sexual activity that can be considered ‘unhealthy’ or ‘abnormal’. Please remember that although this is fiction, parts are based on actual experiences of survivors of child sexual abuse and trauma. Not everyone deals with their trauma in the same way.

This book is NOT A HOW TO GUIDE ON DEALING WITH TRAUMA.

Be mindful of your own mental health and reconsider reading this book if you think these themes may be detrimental to your mental health and welling.
